Every few years growing up, our church would go on a “mystery trip.” These were some of my favorite and least favorite outings, all at the same time. There’s something about not knowing where you are going that can be exciting but most of the time it is just frustrating. When we think in a more eternal-minded way, not knowing where we’re going can turn from frustrating to terrifying. And so when Peter starts out his letter to the churches in modern day Turkey, the first thing he wants them (and us!) to know is where we are going. We can know, without a doubt, where our destination is…and knowing will make all the difference!
