When Jesus made His first public appearance around the age of 30, He walked into the middle of a baptism. John the Baptist was calling the people to repent, turn to God, and get ready for the Messiah… and they were responding! So when Jesus appears in the middle of this, He’s expected to step up to center stage and proclaim His identity as the Messiah. However, God had a different approach in mind. Jesus, Himself, would be baptized. In this sudden change of expectation, we see Jesus identifying Himself as He also calls us to identify with Him.
